Why plastic wrap clings

Some plastic wraps contain a cling agent: a tacky polymer that helps the film adhere to itself and certain surfaces. In a documented polyethylene formulation, polyisobutylene moves toward the film's surface and supplies that cling. Different wraps use different formulations, so static electricity alone isn't a complete explanation for every roll.

The clear film can carry a cling ingredient

The ingredients that make a film and the ingredients that make it cling need not have the same job. SC Johnson's disclosure for Saran Cling Plus lists polyethylene as the plastic and polybutylene as a cling agent. The manufacturer says the latter helps the wrap stick to selected surfaces and to itself.

A flexible sheet can therefore be transparent without being chemically simple. The cling is part of the formulated material, rather than proof that an invisible electrical charge is doing all the work. An ingredient list tells us what that named product uses; it doesn't identify what is inside an unrelated roll.

An additive has to reach the working surface

Polytechs documents another specific example: PW70, a concentrate of polyisobutylene, or PIB, in linear low-density polyethylene. Manufacturers can blend that concentrate into films intended for uses including food wrap. The concentrate is a manufacturing ingredient, not a second sheet that a consumer peels from the roll.

The technical documents describe the cling additive migrating toward the film's surface. At the surface, its tackiness can contribute to contact with another piece of film. Additives and the surrounding plastic influence that migration, so the datasheet specifies compatible formulations. A film's bulk strength and its surface grip are connected through how it is made.

One roll doesn't stand in for every plastic wrap

These examples also explain why the word plastic is too broad to predict cling. It names a family of materials, not one surface recipe. A wrap can be designed to adhere to itself and some container surfaces without behaving like a permanently bonded joint.

Peeling the film away separates its contacting surfaces; this cling-agent example does not depend on a new glue layer curing after application. For the PIB example, the useful sequence is manufacture, movement of the cling ingredient toward the surface, then contact. It is a different story from a glue that cures after it is applied.

The thing to remember

For a disclosed cling-agent film, look at the surface formulation. A tacky ingredient can supply grip without making every plastic film equally clingy.

What this example leaves out

This follows the disclosed Saran Cling Plus ingredient roles and the separate Polytechs PIB/polyethylene example; they aren't asserted to have identical recipes. It doesn't certify food-contact uses, heating conditions or the ingredients of other wraps.
